the mystery

The cross and the empty tomb changed everything… Why?
Throughout this new series we’ve been examining Scripture and finding clues (like detectives) to answer this and some other BIG QUESTIONS about Jesus’ death and resurrection.

We have discovered what Jesus did in this mystery we call Easter.

We’ve looked at prophecies in the Old Testament, and we’ve revealed that Jesus is the Messiah!  We’ve learned that Jesus died as a sacrifice for our sins, then rose again and won the victory over sin and death forever!

After discovering all of this, there is only one more BIG QUESTION in this mystery left to investigate:
today’s big question:
Our Bible story this week is in the book of Acts and tells what Jesus said in His last meeting with His disciples.  He left them with a very big promise, and a very big mission.  Let’s read about it…

What was Jesus’ mission for His disciples?  Jesus told them to wait for the Holy Spirit to come upon them, and then go share His good news with the world!

WOW!  That’s a really big assignment!

LET’S INVESTIGATE

So what do we need to do, detectives?

If you haven’t already, you can start by looking back at the evidence we have already collected in a previous lesson about Jesus’ sacrifice.

Ms. Tammy will help us understand more about what this mystery means for us in this next video.

examine the evidence

Did you know there is more to this mystery than being a great detective?

Jesus wants you to believe and accept personally His sacrifice for your sins.  Only you can make that decision for your own life.

And, Jesus wants you to be His disciple, too!

Being a disciple starts with believing in Jesus, and it is so much more!

You can be a disciple of Jesus, walking with Him and learning from Him–just like the twelve disciples in the Bible.

Remember the mission Jesus gave His disciples before He ascended to heaven?  He told them to share the gospel with others all around the world.

The gospel is the GOOD NEWS that Jesus died for our sins and rose again so we can receive the gift of eternal life!

God wants the whole world to know this good news, so that all can be saved.

CHALLENGE QUESTION:

Here is another mystery:
Do you remember that Jesus said He is going to give us power to help us share the gospel message?  That power will come when something happens.

What will happen to give us power?   (HINT:  Read Acts 1:8 again.)
Mystery Icon

Who should we tell?

.

“But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be My witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

Acts 1:8

What should we tell?

.

For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but
have eternal life.

John 3:16
.

Why should we tell?

This is good, and pleases God our Savior, who wants all people to be saved and to come to a knowledge of the truth. For there is one God and one mediator between God and mankind, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all people.  1 Timothy 2:3-6

Jesus wants all of His disciples to tell others about Him!  That means YOU, too!

This next video is about a young girl, a lot like you, who finds ways to share the gospel in her everyday life.

living proof

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  • How long did Jesus walk on earth after He rose from the grave?
  • How many people did Jesus appear to?
  • What did Jesus promise would happen before He left?
  • What mission did Jesus give His followers?
  • What happened to Jesus after that?
  • What do you think it means to be His witnesses?
  • How can you be a witness for Jesus?

close the case

Thousands of years after Jesus’ resurrection, we still celebrate that Jesus is alive!  We can continue celebrating and sharing the good news that Jesus died for our sins and rose again so that we can receive eternal life!

It looks like we have all the clues we need to answer the BIG QUESTION:  What do we need to do?

Even though Jesus doesn’t live with us on earth right now, He wants us all to become His disciples!  We can do that by

believing in Jesus
knowing Jesus
FOLLowing Jesus
and sharing Jesus

We can celebrate Jesus’ sacrifice every day, not just at Easter time.  But celebrating these very special days each year at Easter time is one way to remember God’s amazing GIFT and share His goodness with the world.

Mystery solved. That’s a GREAT BIG mission from our Lord, Jesus!

And that solves this case!  great work, detectives!

Jesus also wants us to remember His promise–that He will return one day!  As we look forward to His return to earth, we all can help make sure that everyone hears the good news of salvation through Jesus.
Next week, we’ll begin a new series to see what Jesus empowered His disciples (that includes US!) to do next.
CONNECT WITH GOD’S WORD

Here’s a playlist for you to praise God all week!

I will extol the LORD at all times; his praise will always be on my lips. My soul will boast in the LORD; let the afflicted hear and rejoice. Glorify the LORD with me; let us exalt his name together.    Psalm 34:1

Here’s a coloring page for younger ones to remember this lesson.
