This week’s lesson

KNOW THIS

This new series is all about CHALLENGES!

Today’s true story from the Bible is a story of someone who obeyed God even when others didn’t.  He accepted a very special, very BIG dare, from God.

Do you know who we’re going to read about?

Here’s a hint:  His story is found in the book of Genesis, and he got very close to many amazing animals.

That’s right, it’s Noah!  Noah lived in a time when the people on earth were filled with wickedness–no one loved God.  But Noah loved God, and he dared to obey even when others did not.

THINK ABOUT THIS

To obey means to follow someone else’s rules or requests.

We all have people in our lives we should obey.  Parents, teachers, police officers and other authorities.  Sometimes there are things to obey–like school rules or city laws.

Who or what do you have in your life that you should obey?

Did you know God has rules for us to obey?  The Bible says we should obey God’s word always.

Is it ever hard to obey?  What about when you hear a rule, or someone tells you not to do something, that you don’t think is a big deal…  Is it hard to obey then?

Sometimes obedience is hard.  That’s because we all have SIN in our nature.  Remember, sin is that desire in us to go our own way.

Noah had sin in his nature, too.  But the Bible says, “Noah found favor in God’s eyes.”

What did you notice about Noah that set him apart from everyone else on earth at that time?

Noah was righteous and lived a life that honored God.  He was not perfect, but he lived in obedience to God–because he loved God.

It was probably very hard for Noah to live around so many people who didn’t love God and didn’t obey god.  But Noah did what God wanted him to do, even when he was the only one.

We can follow God and His word, too.  Even if it feels hard to do the right thing, we can be brave like Noah and obey God when others don’t.

MORE TO THINK ABOUT:

If Noah had not obeyed God...

THE ARK WOULD NOT HAVE SURVIVED THE FLOOD.

If Noah had not obeyed God...

THERE WOULD BE NO ANIMALS ON EARTH TODAY.

If Noah had not obeyed God...

WE WOULD NOT BE ALIVE TODAY!

Try THIS

How hard must it have been to build an ark large enough to rescue pairs of ALL the animals on earth, plus eight people?

Try your hand at this boat-building challenge!

Noah and his family, and all those animals were on the ark for more than one year!  How LOUD was it?

Try this listening challenge: can you guess these animals by their sounds?

Noah loved God and walked in His ways.

God honored Noah by giving him very specific instructions to build an ark that would be big enough for its precious cargo, and strong enough to survive the flood.

Noah trusted that God knows what is best, and he honored God by obeying very carefully.  Because he did, his family and the animals were rescued, and could continue to live on God’s earth.

DARE YA TO TRY THIS!

Can you poke a pencil through a bag of water without it leaking?  It seems like it will cause a big mess!

If you follow these instructions exactly, maybe you can do this cool challenge at home.

Did you follow the instructions exactly?  After the first pencil went through and didn’t make a mess, were you more confident to try another?

How is that like sin?  SIN is messy.  Disobedience always brings bad consequences.  But when we live our lives consistently obeying God, we grow confident–and we can love and trust God more.

When God asks us to obey Him, we can have confidence to obey again and again, even when others around us aren’t choosing to obey.

Sometimes God will ask us to do things we may not understand, like building a big boat when there’s never been a flood before–when it had never even rained before!

Noah lived his life obeying God, and he chose to trust God.

Because he loved God, lived for God, obeyed God and trusted God, Noah and his family were saved from disaster and death.

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  • How did Noah live differently than other people?
  • Do you think it was easy or hard for Noah to obey God when others weren’t?
  • Do you think it is important to obey God?  Why?
  • Have you ever had a time when you decided to obey God, even when others didn’t?
  • What are some things that could happen if you choose to obey God when others don’t?
  • Do you think God could help you obey Him?  How?

Remember THIS

Let’s review some very important TRUE things we have learned from the Bible:
  • God is perfect and all-knowing!  His rules are always what is best for us–He wants us to obey Him.

  • All people on this earth have sin in our nature.  Not one of us is perfect.  Disobedience is in our nature.

Does that mean we should give up doing the right thing?  No!

Does that mean that when people around us are doing the wrong thing, it’s okay?  No!

The Bible also tells us that we should not copy wrong things going on around us, or conform to wrong patterns we see in the world.  God wants us to be different, like Noah.

Romans 12:2 says, “Do not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

CHALLENGE QUESTION

How should we be transformed and renewed?

Hint:  Transformation is a synonym for rebirth in the Bible.  Read Titus 3:5.

TITUS 3:5

He saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy.  He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit.

Double Dare CHALLENGE

Your Double Dog Dare CHALLENGE for this week is to do something that is hard.

It could be anything, but make sure it’s something for God!  You could:

Read a whole book of the Bible
Memorize a hard verse
Talk to someone about Jesus
Ask someone if you can pray for them
Invite someone to church
Turn from a sin
Give generously to someone in need
Or anything else you feel like God wants you to do!

If you find that the challenge you chose is very difficult to do, try praying to ask God for help by His Holy Spirit!

CONNECT WITH GOD’S WORD

Here’s a playlist for you to praise God all week!

I will extol the LORD at all times; His praise will always be on my lips. My soul will boast in the LORD; let the afflicted hear and rejoice. Glorify the LORD with me; let us exalt His name together. Psalm 34:1

Here’s a coloring page for younger ones to remember this lesson.
