40 Days of Prayer – Week 4

40 Days of Prayer – Part 4

2 Corinthians 4:16-18 16  Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. 17  For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 18  So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen. For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal.

Seen Reality – the Physical World…

Unseen Reality – the Spiritual World

2 Kings 6:15-17 15 When the servant of the man of God got up and went out early the next morning, an army with horses and chariots had surrounded the city. “Oh, my lord, what shall we do?” the servant asked. 16 “Don’t be afraid,” the prophet answered. “Those who are with us are more than those who are with them.” 17 And Elisha prayed, “O LORD, open his eyes so he may see.” Then the LORD opened the servant’s eyes, and he looked and saw the hills full of horses and chariots of fire all around Elisha.

The archway that bridges these two real worlds is prayer.

2 Chronicles 30:27 Then the priests, the Levites, arose and blessed the people, and their voice was heard; and their prayer came up to His holy dwelling place, to heaven. (Daniel 10; 2Kings 6:15-19; 2Co 10:3-5; Eph 6:10-20)

Who is God?

1 Timothy 1:17 17  Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honor and glory for ever and ever. Amen… 1 Timothy 6:16 16  who alone is immortal and who lives in unapproachable light, whom no one has seen or can see. To him be honor and might forever. Amen.

“God dwells in a mode of being totally beyond us and wholly above us and infinitely removed from us yet when we think about God we are trying to think about someone unlike anything we know. God says, who am I like? or to whom will you compare me? The answer being, nobody; nobody’s like God, nothing’s like God. God is like Himself”  A.W. Tozer

1.  God is Infinite!  “Infinite” means to be without limits

Omniscience – All knowing, He has unlimited knowledge…

1 John 3:20 20  whenever our hearts condemn us. For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows everything.

Omnipotent – God is All-Powerful and He has unlimited power…

Psalm 115:3 3  Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him.

Omnipresent – God is also everywhere present…

The great I AM, self-existent Almighty Infinite God… Eternal existence!

Infinite in all His attributes… He is beyond & not limited by time and space and matter… “Transcendent”

God revealed Himself to mankind…

General revelation – Creation & conscience

Special revelation – God’s Word, the Bible & God’s Son, Jesus

This is the One we approach in prayer…

Jeremiah 29:11-13 11  For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12  Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13  You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.

2.  BECAUSE of who God is… I’m NEVER ALONE

Ps 139:7-12 “Where could I go to escape from you? Where could I ever get away from your presence?  If I went up to heaven, you’d be there; if I lay down in the world of the dead, you’d be there.  If I flew way beyond the east or lived in the farthest place in the west,  you’d be there to lead me. You’d be there to help me. I could ask the dark-ness to hide me -but even darkness is not dark for you, and the night is as bright as the day. Darkness and light are the same to you.”(TEV)

1st I look BACKWARD to the Cross!

The Cross reminds me of…

o How deeply God loves me

John 3:16 16  “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

The Cross reminds me of…

o How costly evil & sin is

1 Pet 1:18-19 “God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life… He paid for you with the precious lifeblood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God.”   (NLT)

The Cross reminds me of…

o How completely I’m forgiven

Ephesians 1:7 7  In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, in accordance with the riches of God’s grace

Jesus taught His disciples how to pray… In Mt 6:9-13, Jesus said, when you pray – Start with “OUR FATHER who art in heaven, hallowed be your name”…

Romans 8:15-17 15  For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, “Abba, Father.” 16  The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God’s children. 17  Now if we are children, then we are heirs–heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

What you think God is like determines how you pray

1. PERSONAL!  “Abba, Father!”

2.  PASSIONATE!    “Cry Out!”

3. A PARTNERSHIP!  “By His Spirit”

Romans 8:26  In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.

2 Co13:5 “Examine yourself to see if your faith is real and growing. Test yourself. Remember that Jesus is living in you – unless you’ve failed your test.”

Prov 28:13 “If you try to hide your sins, you will never succeed. But if you humbly confess and reject them, you will receive mercy.”

4th Dimension… I look AROUND & ASK the holy SPIRIT TO USE ME!

Rom 6:13“…Give yourself completely to God–every part of you– since you’ve been given a new life, and you want to be used as a tool in the hands of God, used for his good purposes.” (LB)

Phil 1:6 “I am confident of this, that God who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus.”

Philippians 3:20 But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ,
