This week’s lesson

KNOW THIS

Last month, we learned we are called as believers to share God’s story.  Did you know that God’s story began way before Creation?

God’s story has been going on forever, because He has existed forever!

Did you know the Bible is God’s BIG story, from the beginning of the Bible to the end?

So if the Bible is one big story, what is it all about?

This month we’ll learn more about the Bible, God’s story, and what it means for us.

The Bible is a very big book. It would take you a very long time to read it.

The Bible was written by people. Or was it? Let’s see how much you know.

BIBLE QUIZ

Who is the author of the Bible?

Lots of different authors: At least 35 different people!

Who inspired the Bible?

God gave each of the many authors His words to tell His story.  The Bible is inspired by God’s Holy Spirit.

How many books are there in the Bible?

There are 66 different books in the Bible.

What are the names of the two parts of the Bible?

The Old Testament and the  New Testament

What's the difference between the Old and New Testament?

The Old Testament is everything before Jesus was born, and the New Testament starts with His birth.

What is it called when the Bible foretells of Jesus' coming?

An Old Testament reference to future events is called prophecy.  There are many books of the Old Testament that foretell of Jesus’ coming!

What's the first book of the Bible?

Genesis.

What's the LAST book of the Bible?

Revelation.

What's the first story in the Bible?

The first story in the Bible is God creating the world.

Why does God give us the Bible?

God wants us to know about Him and to know about ourselves.  He wants us to know how much He loves us, and why He had to send Jesus to die for our sins.

TRY THIS

It’s important to know the books of the Bible by name and in order, to help you find verses in God’s Word.

If you didn’t know how to find a Scripture verse in the Bible by the book name and verse reference, it would take you a long, long, long, long time to try to find it!

Can you name all the books of the Bible in order? This song will help you memorize them.

HINT: If you’re coming to Sparks or T&T for Awana this year, this song will help you remember the books of the Bible!

BOOKS OF THE BIBLE GAME

Here is a fun game you can play to help you memorize the books of the Bible!

Ask Mom or Dad if you can use plastic or styrofoam cups for this game.  You can find 66 cups to work with all the books of the Bible, or you can use fewer cups to work with Old Testament and New Testament separately.

You’ll need 39 cups for the Old Testament and 27 cups for the New Testament.

Look at this list and use a marker to write a book of the Bible on each cup.  Or you can print the list, cut the names apart and tape them to the cups.

Now you can have fun stacking the Bible book cups!  Try to put them in order, starting with Genesis.  If you need to start with a small stack, try stacking only the history books, or only the major prophets, or only the New Testament.  You’ll have fun as you learn the Bible!

Can you stack them all?  Ask Mom or Dad to take a photo and post it on our C4KIDS facebook page!

THINK ABOUT THIS

Let’s read 2 Timothy 3:16.

What does this verse say about all Scripture? What four things can it be used for?

  • Teaching is helping someone to learn.
  • Rebuking is helping someone know when they are wrong.
  • Correcting is helping someone get back to what is right.
  • Training in righteousness is helping someone to know how to live the right way.

God’s Word does all those things.  It is the most important book you’ll ever read!  This song will help you memorize this verse.

The Bible is God’s BIG story, from the beginning of the Bible to the end!

Did you know that God’s story began long before Creation?  God’s story has been going on forever because God has existed forever!

God’s Word is God’s story–it’s how He teaches us. He wants us to know His story!

No one was there in the beginning when God made the heavens and the earth.

If God didn’t tell us how and why He made everything, how would we know?  We wouldn’t. And we would be lost, without understanding, without knowing our personal God.

The reason God gave us His word, the Bible, is so that we can know Him.  God wants to teach us all about Himself, all about ourselves, and all about how much we need Him.

All of the true stories in the Bible are telling us one big story about God creating and redeeming the world.

All of the true stories in the Bible are telling us why we need a Savior.  Jesus is our Savior!

Do you know why we need Him?

Creation Fall Redemption
Here’s a big picture from The Gospel Project about the BIG STORY of God’s Word, the Bible.

Did you know, Jesus is there throughout the ENTIRE Bible?

He was there in the beginning, when God created everything.  He was there throughout all of Israel’s history.  He is there at the end of the Bible, when He told John what the end will be like.

The Bible says that Jesus is the Word of God.  Jesus was there in the beginning, and in the middle, and at the end, until forever!

In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

He was with God in the beginning.

Through him all things were made;
without him nothing was made that has been made.

In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us.
We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son,
who came from the Father,
full of grace and truth.
–John 1:1-5, 1:14

What would the story of your entire life look like?  Think back to the very beginning of your life. When and where were you born? Who is in your family?

Now think back to before you were born? How were you created? Can you see that God is in every moment of your life, even before you were born?

You can make a book to tell the story of your life. Use these printable pages to draw or write your story from the beginning.

Can you find a way to show that God was there the whole time?

Share your book with others. Can they see God in the story of your life?

CHALLENGE SCRIPTURE

What does this scripture say about the Word of God?

What is it able to do?  What does that mean?

DISCUSSION QUESTIONS

  • If someone asked you what the Bible was all about, what would you tell them?
  • When and where can you read the Bible?
  • What are some ways you can make reading the Bible more of a top priority?
  • Do you think people still need the Bible today? Why do you think so?

Remember THIS

All the stories in the Bible are telling us one big story about God creating and redeeming the world.

This SUMMARY HELPS US TO UNDERSTAND

The Bible is God’s big story about His love for us. Our part in the story is to have a relationship with God and tell others about Jesus.

Did you know that YOU are in the Bible?

Find and read chapter 17 in the book of John.  Jesus is praying for His disciples in John 17:1-19 before He is crucified.  And then, Jesus prays for all of His disciples, all believers in John 17:20-24.

Boys and girls, that’s YOU!  Jesus prayed for YOU before He went to the cross.  He prayed that you would remain in Him and that you would have unity with other believers.

Jesus prayed that He wanted you to be where He is and to see His glory.  WOW!

That makes YOU a part of God’s story!

The Bible is God’s BIG Story. Next week we’ll learn more about the beginning of God’s creation.

CONNECT WITH GOD’S WORD

Here’s a playlist for you to praise God all week!

I will extol the LORD at all times; His praise will always be on my lips. My soul will boast in the LORD; let the afflicted hear and rejoice. Glorify the LORD with me; let us exalt His name together. Psalm 34:1

Here’s a coloring page for younger ones to remember this lesson.
