“Ark of Salvation”

Gen 6-7 and Selected

“In the Beginning…” series Part 6 of 10

Nehemiah 9:6 You alone are the LORD. You made the heavens, even the highest heavens, and all their starry host, the earth and all that is on it, the seas and all that is in them. You give life to everything, and the multitudes of heaven worship you.

Review…

God created “bara” and energized the entire universe

Days of creation were literal 24 hr days NOT long periods of time

Adam disobeyed God plunging the entire human race into sin

Estimated pre-flood population of 10 billion people (5-17 billion)

Highly sinful preflood civilization were corrupt morally and spiritually

God is Looking…

2 Chronicles 16:9a “For the eyes of the LORD range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him…”

Ezekiel 22:30 “I looked for a man among them who would build up the wall and stand before me in the gap…”

1.  The Men God raised up… (God always has his own)

bullet

Enoch – “walked with God… God raptured him…” (Jude 1:14-15)

o   Noah’s great grandfather… in the midst of wickedness… he pleased God

Genesis 5:24 Enoch walked with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.

Hebrews 11:5 By faith Enoch was taken from this life, so that he did not experience death; he could not be found, because God had taken him away. For before he was taken, he was commended as one who pleased God.

Preaching of Enoch 4,000 years ago – he spoke about the second coming of Jesus Chist!

Jude 1:14-15 14 Enoch, the seventh from Adam, prophesied about these men: "See, the Lord is coming with thousands upon thousands of his holy ones 15 to judge everyone, and to convict all the ungodly of all the ungodly acts they have done in the ungodly way, and of all the harsh words ungodly sinners have spoken against him."

bullet

Methuselah – “when he dies, it shall be sent” – 969 yrs old

o   Noah’s grandfather… the very year Methuselah died the flood began

o   Born when Enoch his father was 65 yrs old – he gave his son a special name

o   A prophetic warning and promise… flood would not come while he was alive

1 Peter 3:20 who disobeyed long ago when God waited patiently in the days of Noah while the ark was being built. In it only a few people, eight in all, were saved through water,

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

bullet

Noah – “found grace v8… righteous v9… blameless v9”

o   God’s grace… Imputed righteousness… blameless in his walk

Genesis 6:8-9 But Noah found favor (grace) in the eyes of the LORD. 9 This is the account of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless among the people of his time, and he walked with God.

Hebrews 11:7 By faith Noah, when warned about things not yet seen, in holy fear built an ark to save his family. By his faith he condemned the world and became heir of the righteousness that comes by faith.

Noah’s flood is called a fable by modern intellectuals & evolutionists.  Even liberal theologians say it’s a good story for children but say it’s a legend, fiction… apostates, deceivers, men not of the faith.  Yet we see Isaiah, Ezekiel, Luke, Paul, Peter and the Lord Jesus fully believing in Noah’s flood.

2.  The Earth God destroyed…

Genesis 6:13 So God said to Noah, "I am going to put an end to all people, for the earth is filled with violence because of them. I am surely going to destroy both them and the earth.

bullet

Global temperate climate, no rainfall… watered with springs (aquifers) & droplets of dew

bullet

Large mass of gentle land topography (more extensive)… no rugged high mountains

bullet

God uses the same Hebrew word “har” for both hills and mountains

bullet

Billions of people (5-17B) and all living creatures on earth (excluding fish – their habitat)

bullet

Everything with the breath of life perished… many fish died but did not wipe them out

bullet

You will be seeing some awesome pictures of a dinosaur fish caught by fishermen

3.  The Ark God instructed Noah to build…

Genesis 6:14-16 14 So make yourself an ark of cypress wood; make rooms in it and coat it with pitch inside and out. 15 This is how you are to build it: The ark is to be 450 feet long, 75 feet wide and 45 feet high. 16 Make a roof for it and finish the ark to within 18 inches of the top. Put a door in the side of the ark and make lower, middle and upper decks.

bullet

Noah (acted in obedience) spent 120 years in building and preaching Gen 6:3; 2Pet 2:5

bullet

Made of gopher wood?? “rooms” – literally cells/ nests/ stalls

bullet

Pitched inside and out… perfect covering, “atonement”  Lev 17:11

bullet

Dimensioned perfectly for stability (tests have shown virtually impossible to capsize, showed to be tilted just short of 90 degrees and still righted itself)… 450’long (1.5 football fields), 75’ wide (almost as wide as our new building), 45’ high (3 times higher than our sanctuary ceiling)

bullet

Build a door in the side (God would shut it) & an 18” opening down from the roof (for ventilation, drinking water, light in upper deck or so)

bullet

Three decks totaling 97,700 sq ft or 1,500,000 cu ft or 522 boxcars or 14,000 grs tonnage

bullet

Not until 1884 when the Queen Mary ocean liner exceeded the Ark’s size

bullet

Calculating ALL known AND extinct animals – the average size of a sheep!

bullet

Possible smaller, young dinosaurs, elephants, etc.

bullet

No more than 60% of the ark’s capacity would have been used

4.  The Occupants God saved…

Genesis 6:18-22 18 But I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark--you and your sons and your wife and your sons' wives with you. 19 You are to bring into the ark two of all living creatures, male and female, to keep them alive with you. 20 Two of every kind of bird, of every kind of animal and of every kind of creature that moves along the ground will come to you to be kept alive. 21 You are to take every kind of food that is to be eaten and store it away as food for you and for them." 22 Noah did everything just as God commanded him.

bullet

All living creatures” including dinosaurs, giraffes, elephants, etc

bullet

Yes there were all living creatures on the ark, even brontosaurs’ and T-rex’s…

bullet

Two of every kind…  Male & female, plus seven (birds 7:3) of “clean” (sacrificial) animals

bullet

God brought the animals to Noah (will come to you) Gen 7:9, 15 (migratory instincts?) – uniformly warm all over the earth… all animals were evenly dispersed… not isolated in various regions over the earth… they were “hand-picked” by God to represent each species

bullet

Considerations for food 6:21, water (opening), bedding, waste (hibernation – year long sleep in their respected “nests” was possible for some of the animals??)

bullet

Eight people saved – Noah/wife & his three sons/wives

bullet

In spite of 120 years as a “preacher of righteousness” – no converts except his family

bullet

The “Ark” saved 8 souls from perishing… We too need to be saved… sin

Jesus is our Ark of Salvation

John 3:16 “For God so loved the world (Dave) that he gave his one and only Son (Jesus DIED for you), that whoever believes in him (from the HEART not head) shall not perish (in HELL) but have eternal life (in HEAVEN).”

Today…

·         God saves souls of men

·         God seeks committed Individuals

·         God works in response to our faith
