“Telling the Message” Acts 11:19-26 & Selected
· Cross Creek is a Great Church because we have Great People Serving a Great God · Do you believe God can use Cross Creek to impact America? What difference are you making?
This morning we’re going to look at the birth of the first great Gentile church. The church was founded under God's sovereignty, control, and in His perfect will. The church is set forth very simply, yet we see the church in Antioch as a dynamic pattern for all churches and for believers to copy today.
Antioch…
1. Discern the Predicament Acts 8:1 And Saul was there, giving approval to his death. On that day a great persecution broke out against the church at Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria. Acts 11:19a Now those who had been scattered by the persecution in connection with Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch…
Ecclesiastes 7:20 There is not a righteous man on earth who does what is right and never sins.
Proverbs 14:34 Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.
2. Remember the Purpose Acts 11:19b-20a 19 … telling the message only to Jews. 20 Some of them, however, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and began to speak to Greeks also…
Cross Creek’s Purpose… · Exalt – Psalms 34:3 Glorify the LORD with me; let us exalt his name together.
· Equip – Ephesians 4:12-13 12 to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.
· Evangelize – Matthew 28:19-20 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."
· Elevate – Matthew 5:13 "You are the salt of the earth…” Matthew 5:14 "You are the light of the world…”
3. Proclaim the Message Acts 11:20 “…telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus.”
John 4:35 Do you not say, 'Four months more and then the harvest'? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.
Acts 4:12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name (Jesus) under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."
4. Trust God’s Promises Acts 11:21 The Lord's hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord.
2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.
God’s Prescription to Revival 2 Chronicles 7:14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.
Psalms 33:12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD…
5. Praise God for the Results Acts 11:22-26 22 News of this reached the ears of the church at Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. 23 When he arrived and saw the evidence of the grace of God, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts. 24 He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord. 25 Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, 26 and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.
