“Telling the Message”

Acts 11:19-26 & Selected

·         Cross Creek is a Great Church because we have Great People Serving a Great God

·         Do you believe God can use Cross Creek to impact America?  What difference are you making?

This morning we’re going to look at the birth of the first great Gentile church. The church was founded under God's sovereignty, control, and in His perfect will. The church is set forth very simply, yet we see the church in Antioch as a dynamic pattern for all churches and for believers to copy today.

Antioch…

bullet

Located 300 miles north of Jerusalem in Syria with over 500,000 citizens

bullet

Archeologist excavated a Main Street of the city that was 4 miles long…

bullet

Theaters, entertainment, public buildings, progressive – hustle/bustle with world-wide trade

bullet

A great center for sports and the pursuit of pleasure day & night… modern day Las Vegas

bullet

Tolerate of all religions… Pagan goddess Tyche “fortune, lucky” was their chief deity…

bullet

Ritual prostitution was a part of their temple worship involving gross immorality…

bullet

Yet in the midst of this wicked environment God was going to do great things…

1.  Discern the Predicament

Acts 8:1 And Saul was there, giving approval to his death. On that day a great persecution broke out against the church at Jerusalem, and all except the apostles were scattered throughout Judea and Samaria.

Acts 11:19a Now those who had been scattered by the persecution in connection with Stephen traveled as far as Phoenicia, Cyprus and Antioch…

bullet

Believers were forced to flee the escalating persecution at the time of Stephen’s martyrdom.

bullet

Persecution brought choices… to leave family, friends, livelihood… or be imprisoned or killed

bullet

Even when things seems to be out of control… Remember, God is in control…

bullet

The “religious Jews” opposed & hated anyone connected to or following after Jesus

bullet

They stoned Stephen… then God allowed great persecution to break out… for a reason…

bullet

The root cause of this predicament is sin… a terminal disease in the hearts of men…

Ecclesiastes 7:20 There is not a righteous man on earth who does what is right and never sins.

bullet

Sin caused this great persecution, sin drove Jesus to the cross, sin destroys lives, families, nations… America is facing impossible situations… many things seems to be “out of control”…

Proverbs 14:34 Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.

bullet

When a nation turns her back on God, He removes His hand of blessing…

bullet

BUT… wisely discern what’s happening across this land… are we living in the last days??

bullet

Believers were first called Christians in Antioch v26 … “ians” – “belonging to the party of…” (Christ)… what party do you belong to… What party do you throw your allegiance to?

bullet

Partisan politics, lies, liberal media bias, immorality, Democrats/Republicans… our great country is divided… a clash of world views… Biblical/secular

bullet

God says a divided house will not stand… Is America a righteous nation?  Kick God out of our schools… huge problems… let’s tax and spend by throwing more money at the problems…

bullet

The believers were scattered… but faithfully shared Christ wherever they went…

2.  Remember the Purpose

Acts 11:19b-20a 19 telling the message only to Jews. 20 Some of them, however, men from Cyprus and Cyrene, went to Antioch and began to speak to Greeks also…

bullet

Some were telling the message to Jews only however others witnessed to the Gentiles Antioch

bullet

They were not skilled pastors & teachers but regular people whose lives Christ changed

bullet

God overruled the persecution/trials/opposition, keenly aware of their purpose…

bullet

James Bond was a “secret agent”… God’s family there are no such thing as a secret Christian

bullet

Their lives were supernaturally touched and changed by the resurrected Christ…

bullet

Get up & go to work, watch TV, go to bed, maybe Sunday go to church to hear about God… then your weekly cycle begins again… What’s the purpose for your life? Do you know?

bullet

God has called EVERY believer to a “Higher Calling” rather than the mundane, routine life…

bullet

We should be living a life of significance not just a life of existence…

bullet

In Class 101 we learn the purpose of Cross Creek, why we exist as a church.

Cross Creek’s Purpose…

·         Exalt Psalms 34:3 Glorify the LORD with me; let us exalt his name together.

bullet

Everything we do must be done for His glory not ours… worship, praise, adore Him

·         Equip Ephesians 4:12-13 12 to prepare God's people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up 13 until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowledge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.

bullet

Believers growing, maturing in their faith, mentoring others.  A slogan we use is “Every Member a Minister”… Every Christian in this church should be actively engaged in ministry… Nursery, Awana’s, nursing homes, shut-in’s, hurting on the streets, Celebrate Recovery, Sunday School, small groups, mentoring, audio/visual, computer skills, even helping in the building… painting, ceilings, insulation… Equiped to function in the body.

·         Evangelize Matthew 28:19-20 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

bullet

The early Church was reaching the lost… in obedience to the Great Commission

bullet

Cross Creek must never stop reaching those lost in sin… before it’s eternally too late

·         Elevate Matthew 5:13 "You are the salt of the earth…”  Matthew 5:14 "You are the light of the world…”

bullet

When we are properly exalting, equipping, evangelizing… we will be elevating our world around us… Being salt and light in our homes, workplace, in America. Making a difference in our culture… like the church in Antioch.

bullet

The church at Antioch understood the times they were living and knew their purpose

bullet

They were not saved to “soak” but saved to “serve”…

3.  Proclaim the Message

Acts 11:20 “…telling them the good news about the Lord Jesus.”

bullet

Proclaiming the good news about Jesus… He died for your sins, was buried & rose again!

bullet

Church at Antioch went after everyone, Jews & Gentiles… preaching Gospel of Jesus Christ

bullet

Bombarded with constant “bad news” negative…  people are hungry to hear good news!

bullet

You can be forgiven of your sins and set free… peace, joy, love, faith… abundant life, heaven

bullet

Do you have a clear purpose as a believer? Do you know someone needing to hear about Jesus?    Who are you praying for?  Are you caring a burden for someone you love?

bullet

The church at Antioch was faithfully proclaiming the Good News… we must too.

John 4:35 Do you not say, 'Four months more and then the harvest'? I tell you, open your eyes and look at the fields! They are ripe for harvest.

bullet

Jesus tells us to open our eyes and look at the fields ripe for harvest… hungry lost souls

bullet

Co-workers, bank tellers, mechanic, doctor, neighbor, family member, friend?

bullet

The message they proclaimed was Jesus… they knew he is the only way for forgiveness of sin

Acts 4:12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name (Jesus) under heaven given to men by which we must be saved."

4.  Trust God’s Promises

Acts 11:21 The Lord's hand was with them, and a great number of people believed and turned to the Lord.

bullet

When you share the Gospel… it’s out of your hands, God has to change their hearts

bullet

When we are faithfully sharing the Good News… souls will be saved… many can testify here

bullet

Notice they were faithful to share, “God’s hand” was with them… God produced the fruit

bullet

People believed and turned… a sign of genuine repentance… show me you’re a Christian!

2 Peter 3:9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. He is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

bullet

God’s perfect will is for everyone to be saved from their sins (God uses human instruments)

bullet

Close your eyes and allow God to bring a person to your mind…

bullet

God wants them saved but He is waiting for YOU to do your part… pray & tell the message…

bullet

Begin to faithfully & fervently pray for that person God brings to your mind… God wants to save them… God’s waiting for you… Personally you must be in position to pray…

bullet

Christians have failed to be the salt & light… God’s waiting for His children to intervene for America… the unrighteous are unable, the addict’s are unable, the immoral are unable, most politicians are unable… God’s saints are the only ones who can touch heaven with our prayers…

God’s Prescription to Revival

2 Chronicles 7:14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

bullet

America needs healing, our friends need healing… a divine touch from our Creator can save

bullet

God is in control, God has not changed, God’s Promises can be Trusted …

Psalms 33:12 Blessed is the nation whose God is the LORD…

bullet

In the midst of a wicked, pagan city a great revival broke out… many people turned to Christ

5.  Praise God for the Results

Acts 11:22-26 22 News of this reached the ears of the church at Jerusalem, and they sent Barnabas to Antioch. 23 When he arrived and saw the evidence of the grace of God, he was glad and encouraged them all to remain true to the Lord with all their hearts. 24 He was a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith, and a great number of people were brought to the Lord. 25 Then Barnabas went to Tarsus to look for Saul, 26 and when he found him, he brought him to Antioch. So for a whole year Barnabas and Saul met with the church and taught great numbers of people. The disciples were called Christians first at Antioch.

bullet

God was moving big time at Antioch – good news traveled fast… Evidence was clearly seen

bullet

Great number of gentile people getting saved… a Supernatural God Quake was happening…

bullet

Vs 29-30 we see a loving church, a giving church, a vibrate church, a sending church…

bullet

The church called in extra help (Paul & Barnabas) to mentor & train all these new converts

bullet

It was here at Antioch the believers were first called Christians…

bullet

Antioch became the hub for sending out missionaries into the world… changing their world…

bullet

Paul’s great missionary journeys began here… The church at Antioch impacted the entire world for Christ… we can too.

bullet

God is in the business of changing hearts… that’s real change you can believe in!

bullet

I believe Cross Creek is impacting this world for Christ… souls saved, growing, serving
