The Spirit Filled Life

There is nothing greater this side of glory than living the wonderful Spirit filled life! | |

Living the Spirit filled life is to live life to the fullest… in purpose and in resurrection power… | |
|
I pray over the next few weeks, God will teach us… open up to us a brand new chapter of spiritual life | |
|
All too often we base our spiritual journey upon our own performance… trying to live like a Christian… | |
|
But for some believers living the Christian life is one big continual struggle… living more in the valleys than on the mountaintops? Grasping to practically live out the wonderful spirit filled life. | |
|
Living the Spirit filled life will break the shackles of sin and send the demons fleeing! | |
|
Knowing Christ Himself – living within you will literally empower you to heights unknown… | |
|
You will begin bearing fruit of Spirit… your prayers are answered, people around you come to Christ… | |
|
The great difference between present-day Christianity and that of which we read in the N.T., is that to us, it is primarily a performance; to them it was a real experience. | |

Living the Spirit filled life is not about trying harder or doing more… it’s all about surrender. REST |
Who is the Holy Spirit?
|
The Holy Spirit is God. He is not an "it." He is not a divine influence. He is not a fleecy white cloud. He is not a ghost nor a concept. He is a person possessing a will, intellect and emotions. He is God - with all the attributes of deity. He is the third person of the Trinity - co-equal with God the Father and God the Son. There is only one God, but He manifests Himself in three persons, whom we call the Trinity. | |

I cannot define the Trinity. No one can. Dr. Wilbur Smith said, "The man who denies the Trinity will lose his soul. The man who tries to understand the Trinity will lose his mind." We, who are finite, cannot comprehend God, who is infinite. | |
|
We see God in the opening verses of the Bible: |
Genesis 1:1-2 1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.

The Holy Spirit was literally energizing the universe… magnetic force fields, rotation of planets, atoms |
We become Born Again by the Holy Spirit… (Picking up from last week where 11 people were born again!)
John 3:6-8 6 Flesh gives birth to flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. 7 You should not be surprised at my saying, 'You must be born again.' 8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."
A Spirit filled life begins the moment you are spiritually born into God’s Family by faith.
Now what? How can I as a Christian live the wonderful Spirit filled life?

With my Bible/notebook/pen, I started to jot down the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the life of a believer today | |

Not even touching on how He was involved in Creation or the writing of the Word of God! (20 truths) | |
|
His ministry is absolutely vital… without Him you would not be saved! He is HOLY | |
|
Let’s take a glimpse of what He presently does… We MUST KNOW & BE CONSCIOUS of His ministry to us! |
Living the Spirit Filled Life:
1. Be Conscious of the Holy Spirit’s Ministry… (References are on your bulletin inserts – go over quickly)
· He convicts/convinces of sin (Tugs on the heart)
John 16:8-10 8 When he (Holy Spirit) comes, he will convict the world of guilt in regard to sin and righteousness and judgment: 9 in regard to sin, because men do not believe in me; 10 in regard to righteousness, because I am going to the Father, where you can see me no longer;
· He produces Salvation through faith
John 3:8 The wind blows wherever it pleases. You hear its sound, but you cannot tell where it comes from or where it is going. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit."
· He sets us free from sin and death
Romans 8:1-2 1 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, 2 because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit of life set me free from the law of sin and death.
· He baptizes us into the body of Christ (all who believe at the moment of salvation)
1 Corinthians 12:13 For we were all baptized by one Spirit into one body--whether Jews or Greeks, slave or free--and we were all given the one Spirit to drink.
· He, God the Holy Spirit Indwells every Believer (He lives in you, He tabernacles in you – Jn 1:14)
1 Corinthians 6:19-20 19 Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit, who is in you, whom you have received from God? You are not your own; 20 you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body.
Romans 8:9 You, however, are controlled not by the sinful nature but by the Spirit, if the Spirit of God lives in you. And if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he does not belong to Christ.
· He secures us eternally (Permanent - for absolutely EVERY believer FOREVER)
John 14:16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor (Holy Spirit) to be with you forever—
· He teaches and guides into all truth
John 16:13 But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come
John 14:26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.
· He brings glory to Christ, not Himself
John 16:14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you.
· He assures us of the reality of our salvation
Romans 8:16 The Spirit himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children.
· He adopts us into God’s family
Romans 8:15 For you did not receive a spirit that makes you a slave again to fear, but you received the Spirit of sonship. And by him we cry, "Abba, Father."
Romans 8:23 Not only so, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for our adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies.
· He helps us to pray when we’re weak
Romans 8:26-27 26 In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express. 27 And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints in accordance with God's will.
· He Imparts Spiritual Gifts (we’ll go into this ministry more next week – come to SS at 9:30am)
1 Corinthians 12:11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he gives them (gifts) to each one, just as he determines.
· He produces spiritual fruit
Galatians 5:22-23 But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.
· He seals us and guarantee’s our future (Identification, I’m a saint, a child of God – Protection, I’m God’s property don’t mess with me – Confirmation, what God begins He will complete, a down payment which obligates the payer to make further payments – redemption/heavenly home)
2 Corinthians 1:22 set his seal of ownership on us, and put his Spirit in our hearts as a deposit, guaranteeing what is to come.
Ephesians 1:13-14 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession--to the praise of his glory.
· He empowers us to make an eternal difference (Lives changed forever – eternal destiny)
Acts 1:8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth."
· He warns of danger & leads us
Acts 20:22-23 22 "And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there. 23 I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me.
· He restrains wickedness and evil (Through Christians in who He indwells… salt/light)
2 Thessalonians 2:7 For the secret power of lawlessness is already at work; but the one who now holds it back will continue to do so till he (Holy Spirit/church raptured) is taken out of the way.
· He emboldens us to stand strong for God
Acts 6:10 but they could not stand up against his wisdom or the Spirit by whom he spoke.
Acts 9:31 Then the church throughout Judea, Galilee and Samaria enjoyed a time of peace. It was strengthened; and encouraged by the Holy Spirit, it grew in numbers, living in the fear of the Lord.
· He graces us with skill, ability & knowledge
Exodus 31:3 and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, ability and knowledge in all kinds of crafts—
· He opens our access to the Father
Ephesians 2:18 For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.
Everyone – wrap your arms around you & tell the Holy Spirit – I love You!
…on and on and on… a Non-exhaustive list - I think you’re realizing the important ministry God the Holy Spirit does
BUT,
He can be…
Ø Resisted - Stiff arm the Lord… avoiding/staying an arm’s length away
Acts 7:51 "You stiff-necked people, with uncircumcised hearts and ears! You are just like your fathers: You always resist the Holy Spirit!
Ø Grieved - Pained by sin… especially sins of the tongue
Ephesians 4:30 And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, with whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.
Ø Quenched - Quenched by disobedience… you only believe what you obey
1 Thessalonians 5:19 Do not put out the Spirit's fire;

We can push the Holy Spirit into a dark, damp corner in the cellar of my life. | |

God hasn’t moved, you have… ALL heavens resources is waiting for you to live the Spirit filled life |
In West Texas is a famous oil field known as the Yates Pool. During the Depression, this field was a sheep ranch owned by a man named Yates. Mr. Yates was not able to make enough money on his ranching operation to pay the principal and interest on the mortgage, so he was in danger of losing his ranch. With little money for clothes or food, his family, like many others, had to live on government subsidy.
Day after day, as he grazed his sheep over those rolling West Texas hills, he was no doubt greatly troubled about how he would be able to pay his bills. Then a seismographic crew from an oil company came into the area and told Mr. Yates that there might be oil on his land. They asked permission to drill a wildcat well, and he signed a lease contract.
At 1,115 feet they struck a huge oil reserve. The first well came in at 80,000 barrels a day. Many subsequent wells were more than twice as large. In fact, thirty years after the discovery, a government test on one of the wells showed that it still had the potential flow of 125,000 barrels of oil a day.
And Mr. Yates owned it all! The day he purchased the land he received the oil and mineral rights. Yet, he was living on relief. A multi-millionaire living in poverty! The problem? He did not know the oil was there. He owned it, but he did not possess it.
I do not know of better illustrations of the Christian life than these. The moment you become children of God through faith in Christ, you become an heir of God, and all of His resources are made available to you. Everything you need - including wisdom, love, power - to be a man or woman of God and to be fruitful witnesses for Christ is available to you.
But most Christians continue to live in self-imposed spiritual poverty because they do not know how to appropriate from God those spiritual resources which are already theirs. Mr. Yates owned a vast ocean of oil, yet lived in ignorance of his vast riches.
Living a Spirit Filled Life:
2. Be Sensitive to His Presence…

Hebrews 12:1 Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.
Psalms 51:10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
John 17:17 Sanctify them by the truth; your word is truth.
· Yielded Dependence
Romans 8:6-8 6 The mind of sinful man is death, but the mind controlled by the Spirit is life and peace; 7 the sinful mind is hostile to God. It does not submit to God's law, nor can it do so. 8 Those controlled by the sinful nature cannot please God.
Romans 12:1 Therefore, I urge you, brothers, in view of God's mercy, to offer your bodies as living sacrifices, holy and pleasing to God--this is your spiritual act of worship.
· Living a Life of Faith
Hebrews 11:6 And without faith it is impossible to please God, because anyone who comes to him must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who earnestly seek him.
Romans 1:17 For in the gospel a righteousness from God is revealed, a righteousness that is by faith from first to last, just as it is written: "The righteous will live by faith."

Living a Spirit Filled Life:
3. Be Filled with His Spirit
Ephesians 5:15-18 15 Be very careful, then, how you live--not as unwise but as wise, 16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil. 17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the Lord's will is. 18 Do not get drunk on wine, which leads to debauchery. Instead, be filled with the Spirit.

Exercise wise conduct, be cautious how you live… we’re living in a dark sinful world | |
|
Don’t be senseless but comprehend intellectually what pleases God. | |
|
Don’t get drunk on wine, for a drunken man acts abnormally… the wine controls him | |
|
A command to be filled with the Spirit… literally be controlled by the indwelling Holy Spirit. | |
|
Be spiritually drunk… be yielded and controlled by God’s indwelling presence. | |
|
We’re commanded to be filled continually with the Holy Spirit. | |
|
You have all of God, does God have all of you? Be filled, bear fruit, live victorious! |

And I pray that you, being rooted and established in love, 18 may have power, together with all the saints, to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ, 19 and to know this love that surpasses knowledge--that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. 20 Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, 21 to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.
